Designing the St. Patrick’s Day Shootout 2027 Logo
The central idea behind this logo was simple: combine softball and St. Patrick’s Day without allowing either theme to overpower the other.
At the heart of the artwork is a large black-and-green pot filled not with traditional gold alone, but with bright golden softballs. This instantly connects the familiar Irish “pot of gold” symbol with the sport itself.
Surrounding the pot are layers of shamrocks, gold coins, decorative highlights, and rich green architectural shapes that create depth and give the logo the substantial appearance needed for tournament apparel.
The Louisville Slugger Sports Complex emblem sits prominently near the center, tying the artwork directly to the tournament venue while becoming part of the overall composition instead of appearing as an unrelated addition.
Above everything, the bold 2027 establishes the year immediately.
The large “St. Patrick’s” lettering dominates the center of the design, while “Day Shootout” uses a more energetic script treatment underneath. This combination creates contrast between strong athletic lettering and celebratory event typography.
That balance is important. A tournament logo needs enough personality to feel special, but the words still need to remain readable when the design is printed at smaller sizes.
A Green and Gold Color Palette Built for St. Patrick’s Day
Green and gold were natural choices for this event, but we wanted the palette to feel more dimensional than simply placing bright green letters on a shirt.
Several shades of green are used throughout the composition.
Deep forest green provides structure and creates strong contrast. Medium and brighter greens bring the shamrocks and lettering forward. Gold adds warmth and immediately introduces the “lucky” St. Patrick’s Day theme.
Black is also an important part of the palette.
The black pot, outlines, shadows, and interior areas provide visual separation between the green and gold. Without those darker areas, the design could easily become overly bright and difficult to read.
This is particularly important in apparel artwork, where a logo may eventually appear on shirts of many different colors.
The gold also serves another purpose: it connects the Irish theme with the idea of a championship prize. Gold naturally communicates winning, achievement, celebration, and reward—all appropriate themes for a competitive sports tournament.
Shamrocks, Gold Coins, and the Pot of Gold
St. Patrick’s Day offers designers an enormous collection of recognizable visual symbols, but using too many of them can quickly make a logo look cluttered.
For this design, we selected several of the strongest elements and allowed them to repeat naturally throughout the composition.
Shamrocks
Shamrocks appear at different sizes throughout the logo, creating movement around the central softball imagery.
The shamrock is one of the most recognizable symbols associated with Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day. According to longstanding tradition, St. Patrick is said to have used the three leaves of a shamrock to illustrate the Christian Trinity while teaching in Ireland.
Regardless of how literally the story is interpreted historically, the shamrock eventually became one of the most enduring visual symbols of Irish identity and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Gold Coins
Small gold coins are scattered around the composition, some decorated with shamrock imagery.
These help reinforce the pot-of-gold concept while also functioning as decorative accents that fill otherwise empty areas of the logo.
The Pot of Gold
Rather than simply placing a traditional pot of coins into a softball logo, we adapted the concept directly to the tournament.
The pot is overflowing with golden softballs.
This visual connection makes the theme immediately understandable:
St. Patrick’s Day + softball + competition.
That type of visual storytelling is especially valuable in event merchandise because someone should be able to understand the basic event theme even before reading every word.
What Is a Feis?
Because St. Patrick’s Day events often draw inspiration from Irish culture and traditions, it is worth looking at another long-established Irish event tradition: the feis.
The Irish word feis broadly refers to a festival or gathering and historically could include music, poetry, storytelling, cultural activities, athletic competition, and other forms of community celebration.
The plural is commonly written feiseanna.
Over time, particularly among Irish communities in Ireland, Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, and elsewhere, the word became closely associated with organized Irish cultural competitions—especially Irish dancing, traditional music, singing, and related arts.
Today, many people hear the word feis and immediately think of an Irish dance competition, but the roots of the term are broader.
Historically, Irish gatherings combined culture, competition, community, and celebration. In that sense, there is an interesting connection between the traditional idea of a feis and modern themed sporting events.
Both bring people together around:

- community
- performance
- tradition
- achievement

A modern softball tournament such as the St. Patrick’s Day Shootout is obviously very different from a traditional Irish feis, but the underlying spirit of gathering people together for competition and celebration has some familiar parallels.

One of the best-known examples from Irish tradition is the Tailteann Games, traditionally associated with ancient gatherings at Tailtin. Historical and legendary accounts describe these assemblies as occasions involving athletic contests, ceremonies, trade, entertainment, and social gatherings.

In this design, dimensional effects appear throughout the typography, shamrocks, coins, softballs, and structural frame.

Too many highlights, shadows, textures, and overlapping objects can make an event logo visually confusing.
The largest words therefore use strong silhouettes and substantial outlines. Decorative elements sit behind or around the primary typography instead of cutting excessively through it.
