An aggressive, wearable identity crafted to dominate the mat and the merch table.
When we were asked to create the Cougar Clash 2026 logo for a wrestling event, the brief called for a dynamic, print‑ready vector mark that would read boldly on T‑shirts, look striking on banners, and reproduce reliably across embroidery and print methods. The resulting design is a layered, energetic badge that blends a powerful cougar mascot, hand‑lettered event title, and a compact wrestling silhouette—built from clean vector shapes so it scales perfectly from a left‑chest mark to a full‑back statement piece .
Design Concept
The core idea behind Cougar Clash 2026 was to capture raw energy and motion in a single, cohesive composition. A snarling cougar leans forward, claws extended, creating an implied forward motion that leads the eye to the event title. Below and integrated into the lockup is a simplified wrestling silhouette that grounds the design in sport and provides a clear visual cue about the event discipline. The combination—mascot + title + athlete figure—produces a compact narrative: intensity, competition, and community.
We designed the artwork as a badge form that sits naturally on apparel: the cougar and lettering create a top‑heavy focal area while the wrestling figure and year anchor the bottom. This badge approach also simplifies placement: left chest, centered front, or large back print are all straightforward with the same core art. The entire illustration is vector based for crisp edges and consistent reproduction across sizes .
Typography
Typography plays a starring role in the Cougar Clash identity. The event name is rendered in a custom, brush‑inspired script with aggressive strokes and ink‑splat accents—this gives the title motion and attitude that matches the mascot. For the secondary block (the year “2026” and any division copy), we used a condensed athletic sans with heavy weight and squared terminals to reinforce the sport aesthetic and maintain legibility at smaller sizes.
Letterforms are tuned to match the illustration’s stroke weight so the letters don’t appear visually lighter or heavier than the mascot artwork. Kerning and tracking were adjusted specifically for apparel reading distances—tight enough to feel compact on chest prints, yet loose enough that each letter remains distinct when printed larger on backs .
Color Palette
The final color strategy balances bold contrast with practical print separations:
- Primary Accent (Cougar Gold): a warm golden hue gives the mascot energy and helps the mark pop on dark shirts.
- Deep Charcoal / Black: used for outlines, shadows, and strong contrast to keep shapes readable and to produce crisp halftones in separations.
- Off‑White / Pale Highlight: for teeth, eye highlights, and typographic textures to provide dimensionality without heavy ink coverage.
- Neutral Grey: subtle fills and secondary textures that read well on both light and dark fabrics.
This four‑way palette was chosen to look great on white and dark shirts, but we also prepared alternate separations: a two‑color version (gold + black) for cost‑sensitive screen print runs, and a single‑color reversal (white on dark shirts) for embroidery or very small placements .
Composition & Graphic Details
- Mascot focal point: the cougar’s forward gesture is the visual anchor; claws and facial details are simplified into bold shapes to avoid small print issues.
- Title integration: the hand‑lettered “Cougar Clash” overlaps and weaves through the mascot art, creating a graffiti‑like unity that reads as one emblem.
- Year and sport lockup: “2026” sits in a compact box beneath the title, with a silhouetted wrestler grappling on a mat ring to clearly communicate the event type.
- Texture: intentional distress marks and paint‑swoosh shapes add toughness and movement while preserved as optional layers so printers can omit them if needed.
- Negative space: carefully considered so the badge breathes on fabric and retains legibility at small sizes.
All internal details were treated as vector shapes—not raster textures—so separations and half‑tones can be produced cleanly by printers .
Production Notes (Printer‑Ready Guidance)
- File formats: deliver as layered EPS, AI, and SVG with outlined text and separated color layers for screen printing, DTG, DTF, and vinyl applications. Provide high‑resolution PNGs for online stores and mockups.
- Color separations: include full‑color, two‑color (gold + black), and one‑color (white on dark or black on light) variants. Provide Pantone® suggestions and CMYK equivalents for each palette color.
- Line weights: avoid strokes below 0.7 pt for screen printing and embroidery; convert tiny strokes to filled shapes to prevent gaps or breaks in printing.
- Embroidery: prepare a simplified mark (no tiny highlights or distress) and limit stitch colors to 2–3 for chest patches or caps. Reduce fine gradients and halftones.
- Mockups: include template previews on white, black, and a team color T‑shirt to review contrast. Test at actual chest sizes (2.5–4″ for left chest, 10–12″ for full back).
- Print test: request a physical press proof when possible—DTG/DTF colors can shift on different fabric types and underbase requirements vary for dark shirts .
Why Vector Matters for Event Apparel
Vector artwork guarantees crisp edges at any scale and makes color separations predictable—critical when producing hundreds of shirts or offering multiple apparel items. The Cougar Clash logo was built entirely in vectors so it can be used for shirts, hoodies, program covers, vinyl banners, medals, and more without loss of quality .
Optional Variations Provided
- Full badge with mascot, title, and wrestler silhouette (main use).
- Simplified badge (no texture) for embroidery.
- Single‑color outline mark for vinyl and low‑color screen print runs.
